Timber Windows Barrhead

Woodfellas are the timber window experts based in Barrhead. We build, refurbish, and install wooden windows from our Barrhead base, serving both residential properties and business properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window we build is custom-built from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security included as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a newer extension, or a complete new set for any sort of property, we produce them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

What timber windows we make

Two types. Two different requirements. We make one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash window types

The traditional window style for Scottish properties.

Sash windows move vertically within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights doing the work. They’re the standard window type on most of Barrhead’s period tenements, and the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

Whether your sash windows need restoring, sorting, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that replicate the original profiles and proportions, while still delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards.

Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest call where the existing frames are in good condition. We complete full inspections before recommending any replacement.

Standard casement windows

Hinged. Swing outward to open. Bigger opening, easier access from inside. Typical on Barrhead properties dating from the 1920s on, including rear extensions, dormers, and new builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three arrangements, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page covers all available designs and configurations in full detail.

Wood windows, why they’re the best choice

Timber has been the top window material for generations. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter to property owners.

Natural insulation

Here’s something that trips up people: timber actually carries heat far less quickly than aluminium, and it outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width. That means the frame itself is doing stronger thermal work before you even consider the double glazing.

Scotland depends on heating bills. A timber frame’s insulating characteristics make a measurable effect to what you pay, and that difference shows up over the years.

Repair, don’t replace

The great thing about timber windows is that if something gets damaged, you can sort it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Remove it, fit fresh timber. Damaged frame section? Rebuild it. UPVC isn’t repairable: it fails, it ends up in landfill, you start again.

Over the lifespan of a property, the ability to maintain and repair timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement means real savings in both cost and waste.

Timber and sustainability

We get all our timber from sustainably managed woodland, so you can know it’s ethically produced.

Timber: renewable. Stores carbon. Biodegrades naturally. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly carbon-heavy.

If you care about the carbon footprint of your home, timber is the clear choice.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Timber windows possess a weight, physical depth, and texture that no man-made alternative can reproduce.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way UPVC never quite manages.

And they bring genuine value to a property, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double-glazed timber windows

Every window we build, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units fitted. No add-ons needed.

The sealed unit fits within the timber frame and works with two panes of glass separated by a sealed cavity. The effect is lower heat transfer and improved sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.

Traditional divided-light look? We can add glazing bars, a simple addition that makes a real visual difference.

If your older timber windows are still solid but single glazed, we can often switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the original frames and lifts performance without a full replacement.

Common on Barrhead’s older properties. Original sash windows: well-built. Single glazing: lets in cold air and road noise.

Every unit we put in satisfies current building regulations governing thermal performance.

Conservation area timber windows

Scotland has over 600 recognised conservation areas, and being in one affects what you can do with your windows.

Where a property sits in one of these areas, UPVC is not an acceptable window material, and the local planning authority will often require replacements to match the existing design in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we know exactly what the council expects, nothing new to us.

We can walk you through consent requirements and produce windows that tick every planning condition while giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.

Types of timber we use

Two timber types. That’s what we use across the entire window product range.

Treated pine is the most requested option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and works well in Barrhead’s wet climate.

Want a natural timber look? Need extra strength? Hardwood. Naturally more immune to damage. Accepts stains and oils really well.

We’ll tell you which timber is best for your project based on the property, the exposure, and what look you’re after.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows can you make?

We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Barrhead style, working by sliding up and down within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also produce fixed window panels to match any opening setup.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

On results, longevity, and looks: yes. Timber insulates better at the same frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In a significant number of cases, yes. Where existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the existing frames and character while improving thermal and acoustic standards.
