Timber Windows Bargeddie

Woodfellas started in Bargeddie manufacturing timber windows, and that’s what we’ve always done. We manufacture, renovate, and put in wooden windows from our Bargeddie base, serving residential properties and businesses throughout Central Scotland.

Each window is custom-built using responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security are fitted as standard on every window.

Sash and case for a tenement, casements for a contemporary extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for whatever kind of property you’ve got, we produce them all ourselves and fit ourselves.

What wooden windows we offer

Two main types of timber window, each built for different properties and specifications. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the go-to.

You know what makes sash windows clever? They slide vertically in a timber box frame using weighted cords and pulleys. They’re the classic window on most of Bargeddie’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, sort, and manufacture custom sash windows that replicate the period profiles and proportions while giving you modern thermal and acoustic results.

Restoration typically means draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades. Smartest call where existing frames are solid. We inspect fully before recommending any replacement.

Traditional casement windows

Casement windows swing out on hinges, creating a wider opening for ventilation and making window cleaning easier from inside. They’re the typical choice on Bargeddie properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, we make custom timber casement windows in all three styles. Like our sash windows, every single one is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

Why timber is the right choice

Timber windows have been around for hundreds of years, and there’s a reason they’ve stayed the go-to. It’s not just tradition, timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to homeowners.

Natural insulating properties

The frame counts, not just the glass. Timber carries heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame width, giving better thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

In a climate like Scotland, where heating bills are a real concern for property owners, the thermal properties of a timber frame make a real difference.

Repair it, don’t replace it

Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can repair it.

Rot in a sill can be excised and new timber spliced in its stead. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such option: when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and everything starts from scratch.

Over the working life of a property, maintaining and repairing timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts money and reduces material waste. It’s a simple calculation.

Environmental sustainability

All our timber is sourced from sustainably managed woodland.

Timber is a renewable material that stores carbon across its lifespan and breaks down naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-based plastic, and aluminium production is extremely energy-intensive.

Concerned about your property’s environmental impact? Timber. Clear option.

The character and value of timber windows

The substance, depth, and grain of timber windows is something no artificial alternative can replicate.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way UPVC simply can’t match.

And they contribute genuine value to a property too, especially older properties where period features are part of what makes them the attraction.

Timber windows with double glazing

Every window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units fitted. No extras required.

The sealed unit sits within the timber frame, using two sheets of glass separated by a sealed cavity to limit heat transfer and boost sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: strong thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.

For properties that need a traditional divided-light appearance, we can add glazing bars as an addition.

Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In a lot of cases we can convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, keeping the existing frames and lifting thermal performance without replacing everything.

Regular request on Bargeddie’s older properties. Existing sash windows: well-constructed. Single glazing: allows in cold and road noise.

Every unit we fit satisfies current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Conservation area timber windows

Over 600 conservation areas throughout Scotland. The chances are yours is one of them.

Property in a conservation area? UPVC: not acceptable. Council will likely require replacements matching the original. Material, design, profile.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we understand what the council expects.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail for anyone who wants to know more.

Types of timber we use

We stock two timber types across the entire window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Treated pine represents the most frequently chosen choice. It is pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a painted finish well, and works well in Bargeddie’s wet conditions.

Want a natural timber finish? Need extra strength? Hardwood. Naturally more immune to deterioration. Takes stains and oils beautifully.

We help you choose the right timber for each project, based on the property, its exposure level, and the finish you need. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.

Wooden windows, frequently asked questions

What timber windows do you make?

We make both sash and case windows and casement windows, offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case windows are the traditional Bargeddie design, working by sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also build fixed window panels to match any opening configuration.

Timber windows vs UPVC, which is better?

For performance, lifespan, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates better at the same frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be restored not replaced. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and greatly favoured in conservation areas.

Is it possible to replace single glazing in timber windows?

In many cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in good condition, we can switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the original frames and appearance while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
