Woodfellas are Ayr’s established timber window experts, manufacturing, restoring, and installing timber windows from a Ayr base that covers homes and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window we make is custom-built from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and enhanced security installed as standard.
Whether you need sash and case windows for a traditional tenement, casement windows for a modern extension, or a full set of replacement windows for any kind of property, we produce them in-house and put them in ourselves.
Our timber window range
We produce two primary types of timber window, one suited to older properties, one built for newer ones. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
The traditional window type for Scottish properties.
Sash windows move vertically within a box frame, via a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They represent the standard window type on most of Ayr’s period tenements, and they’re the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, fix, and build custom sash windows that replicate the original profiles and proportions while achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance.
The original frames are in good shape, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible option. We complete full surveys first, before we recommend replacement.

Hinged windows
Casement windows are the hinged type: they open out to open, which gives you a larger opening for fresh air and means you can reach them from inside from inside. They’re common on Ayr properties built from the 1920s on, and they’re the usual option for rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we produce custom timber casement windows in all three setups. Like our sash windows, every single one is built to order and fitted with double glazing as standard.
Our timber casement windows page has more detail on all listed designs and options.
Why timber windows are the right choice
Timber has been the top window material for hundreds of years. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that make a difference to homeowners.
Natural heat insulation
The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber transfers heat far less quickly than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the comparable frame width, giving better thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.
In Scotland, heating bills are a real concern. The thermal qualities of a timber frame make a measurable impact to those costs, and it’s worth knowing.
Repair not replace
The great thing about timber windows is that if something deteriorates, you can sort it.
Rot in a sill can be taken out and fresh timber fitted in. A damaged part of frame can be replaced in section. UPVC can’t be repaired in the same way. When it breaks down, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you start again.
Think about it: over the lifespan of a property, being able to repair and maintain timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious money and reduces a lot of waste.
Sustainability
The timber we work with comes from ethically managed forests, every piece of it.
Timber holds carbon and breaks down cleanly, it’s a renewable resource. UPVC is plastic made from oil, and aluminium production is extremely energy-intensive.
Your property’s environmental footprint is important? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.
Character and property value
The substance, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is something no synthetic alternative can replicate.
On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way that UPVC never quite manages.
Timber windows also add tangible value to a property, particularly older properties where period features are what attracts buyers.
Double glazed timber windows
Every window we produce, sash or casement, includes double-glazed sealed units fitted. No extras needed.
The sealed unit fits inside the timber frame: it’s two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, which limits heat transfer and lifts sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you strong thermal and acoustic results across both types, sash or casement, same result.
For properties that call for a traditional divided-light look, we can install glazing bars as part of the installation.
Got older timber windows that are still sound but only single glazed? In many cases we can convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the original frames and lifting thermal performance without replacing everything.
It happens a lot on Ayr’s older properties, original sash windows that are well-constructed, but the single glazing allows in cold air and street noise like it’s not even there.
Building regulations for thermal standards? Every unit we put in meets them. No exceptions.

Timber windows for conservation areas
There are over 600 conservation areas across Scotland, quite a number.
If your property is in one of these areas, you need to know that UPVC is not an permitted window material. Your local council will often require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.
Twenty years of manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. The council requirements? We’ve seen them all. We understand what’s expected.
We help with consent requirements. We make windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern standards included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more detail.
Our timber options
Two timber types. That’s what we use across the entire window range.
Treated pine is the most popular choice, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, takes a paint finish well, and works well in Ayr’s damp climate.
If you prefer a natural timber look, or if you need something extra durable, hardwood is the one, it’s naturally more immune to deterioration and it accepts stains and oils really well.
We’ll advise on which timber is most appropriate for your job based on the property, the exposure level, and what finish you’re after.
Timber windows, your questions answered
What types of timber windows do you make?
We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Ayr style, sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing out. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
On results, longevity, and looks: yes. Timber insulates more effectively at the same frame thickness, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage happens. It’s also the sole material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.
Upgrading single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?
In a significant number of cases, yes. Where current timber frames are in sound condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the existing frames and character while improving thermal and acoustic standards.
