Timber Windows Auchinleck

Woodfellas are Auchinleck’s leading timber window specialists, manufacturing, refurbishing, and installing timber windows from a Auchinleck base that serves residential properties and business properties right across Central Scotland.

Not a single window we produce without being made to measure. Sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and upgraded security, all standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete new set: we build in-house and put them in ourselves.

What wooden windows we make

Two types of timber window. Each suited to different properties and requirements. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Both with double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The traditional Scottish window design.

Sash windows move vertically within a timber box frame, using a system of cords and counterbalance weights. They are the original window type on most of Auchinleck’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and they’re the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

Whether your sash windows need renovating, fixing, or replacing altogether, we make custom ones that replicate the period profiles and proportions, while still achieving modern thermal and acoustic performance.

If your existing frames are in good condition, restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the smartest option. We do full surveys before recommending any replacement, so you always know where you stand.

Standard casement windows

The hinged window. Opens outward, lets in more ventilation, easy to clean from inside with no fuss. Casement windows became standard on Auchinleck properties from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung. Top hung. Fixed. We make custom timber casement windows in all three. Every one made to measure. Fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows section covers all listed styles and choices in full detail.

Why timber makes sense for windows

Timber has been the leading window material for centuries. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that make a difference to homeowners.

Natural heat insulation

Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at comparable frame widths. This gives you better thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.

In Scotland, energy costs are a real issue. The insulating qualities of a timber frame make a tangible effect to what you spend on heating, and it’s worth knowing.

Repair, don’t replace

Timber window gets damaged? You can fix it.

Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You take it out and put in new timber. Damaged section of frame? Replace in section. With UPVC, you don’t have that option. When it fails, the entire thing goes to landfill and you’re starting again.

Over a property’s working life: repair and maintain, not replace. Saves cost. Reduces material waste.

Timber sustainability

We procure all our timber from ethically managed forests, so you can rest easy it’s responsibly produced.

Timber is a renewable resource that holds carbon throughout its working life and biodegrades cleanly at end of life. UPVC is a petroleum-derived plastic, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy.

Your home’s carbon impact is important? Then timber is the obvious choice. It always has been.

Character and property value

The heft, feel, and natural grain of timber windows is something no man-made alternative can match.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Blonde stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they belong. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly wrong, it just can’t that same rightness.

And they bring tangible value to a property, especially older properties where period features are what buyers look for.

Double glazed wooden windows

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we produce feature double-glazed sealed units as standard. It’s always installed.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two layers of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window styles.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We add glazing bars.

Got older timber windows that are still solid but only single glazed? In many cases we can switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames and lifting thermal performance without replacing everything.

This is a common project on Auchinleck’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-built, but the single glazing allows in cold air and street noise, and converting to double glazing addresses both.

Every unit we put in complies with current building regulations for thermal performance. Always.

Timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland contains more than 600 designated conservation areas.

Conservation area, and your windows need attention? UPVC is not an approved material, your local council may require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a firm requirement.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know what the council requires.

We can advise on consent conditions and build windows that tick every planning condition while still giving you modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth if you want to read up.

Our timber options

Two timber types, and that’s what we use across all window range.

Treated pine is the most popular choice, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, takes a paint finish well, and performs reliably in Auchinleck’s wet climate.

If you want a natural timber look, or if you need something extra durable, hardwood is the answer, it’s inherently more immune to wear and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Property, exposure, finish, three things we consider before helping you choose the right timber for each project. Get those right and the rest follows.

Timber windows, your questions answered

What types of timber windows do you make?

Sash and case is the traditional Auchinleck window, moving up and down in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and open out, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we make fixed window panels too, for any window opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

Three things: results, lifespan, appearance. Timber wins on all three. More effective insulation at the same frame width. Considerably longer lifespan when maintained. Repairable, not replaced. And it’s the only material permitted for listed buildings, strongly favoured in conservation areas too.

Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes! If your existing frames are in solid condition, we can upgrade to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration, preserving the existing frames and look while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
