Timber Windows Ashton

Woodfellas are the timber window specialists based in Ashton. We manufacture, refurbish, and install timber windows from our Ashton workshop, working across both homes and commercial properties across Central Scotland.

Every window we produce is built to order from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and upgraded security included as standard.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a full new set: we build in-house and fit ourselves.

What wooden windows we offer

Two types. Two different requirements. We build one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

The traditional Scottish window, and it hasn’t changed.

Slide vertically. Box frame. Weighted cords and pulleys. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Ashton’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

We restore, sort, and produce custom sash windows. Original profiles. Period proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic standards.

The original frames are in good shape, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the smarter call. We carry out full assessments first, before we ever recommend replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows swing outward on hinges, giving a bigger opening for fresh air and making cleaning straightforward from inside. They’re the typical option on Ashton properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We make custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed configurations. Just like our sash windows, every casement is custom-built and fitted with double glazing as standard, no exceptions.

For more on styles and configurations, our timber casement windows section has everything you need.

Why timber is the right choice for windows

Timber has been the leading window material for generations. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to households.

Natural insulating qualities

The frame matters, not just the glass. Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame width, giving better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and energy costs are no joke, so the fact that timber frames retain warmth better makes a tangible impact to what you spend.

Fix, don’t replace

The best thing about timber windows is that if something gets damaged, you can repair it.

Rot in a sill or bottom rail? Take it out and put in new timber. Damaged section of frame? Repair. UPVC isn’t repairable. When it fails, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re back to square one.

Think about it: over the lifetime of a property, being able to maintain and repair timber windows rather than going for full replacement cuts serious cost and reduces a lot of waste.

The sustainable option

Every length of timber we work with is procured from responsibly managed forests.

Timber is a sustainable material that sequesters carbon throughout its working life and biodegrades naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment matters to you.

Your home’s environmental impact matters to you? Then timber is the obvious option. It always has been.

Character and property value

Timber windows possess a weight, depth, and grain that no artificial material can match.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way that UPVC never quite manages.

Timber windows also bring tangible value to a property, particularly period properties where period features are part of the appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

Sash or casement. Every window. Double-glazed sealed units included as standard.

Two panes of glass. A sealed cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and handles the rest, cutting heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: strong thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

Need a traditional divided-light look? We install glazing bars.

Older frames. Single glazing only. Still structurally sound? We can often convert to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames are preserved. Thermal performance gets better. No full replacement.

Ashton’s older properties throw up this situation all the time. Well-built original sash windows, but single glazing that lets in cold air and road noise like it isn’t there.

Every unit we put in: meets current building regulations for thermal standards.

Conservation area timber windows

There are more than 600 conservation areas in Scotland, a significant number.

Conservation area, and your windows need replacing? UPVC is not an acceptable material, your local council may require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile. It’s a strict requirement.

Having manufactured timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties across Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a strong understanding of what the council expects.

Consent conditions, planning conditions, modern performance, we handle it all. And our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth for anyone who wants to know more.

Wood types we work with

Two timber types. That’s it. We stock both for the entire window range.

Treated pine is the most popular option. It is pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up well in Ashton’s wet climate.

Want a natural timber finish or need extra strength? Hardwood is what you need, by nature more immune to damage, and it accepts stains and oils so well.

Not sure which timber to go for? We advise on the right option for each job based on the property, the exposure level, and the finish you have in mind.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Ashton style, moving up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows open out. We also produce fixed window panels for any opening setup.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

For results, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber is better. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be restored rather than replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is strongly preferred in conservation areas.

Upgrading single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

In many cases, yes. If your existing timber frames are in solid condition, we can convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. That preserves the existing frames and character while boosting thermal and acoustic performance.
