Woodfellas are the timber window team operating from Ashfield. We build, renovate, and install timber windows from our Ashfield workshop, covering both houses and commercial properties right across Central Scotland.
Every window we make is made to measure from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security included as standard.
Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a new extension? A full new set for any property? We make them all ourselves and install ourselves.
Our timber window range
Two primary types of timber window, each right for different properties and requirements. Both available in treated pine or hardwood, and both include double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash window types
The traditional window style for Scottish properties.
You know what makes sash windows great? They slide vertically in a box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the original window on most of Ashfield’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements, and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
We renovate, sort, and make custom sash windows. Original profiles. Original proportions. Modern thermal and acoustic performance.
Restoration usually covers draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the best call where the existing frames are solid. We complete full inspections before recommending any replacement.

Standard casement windows
Casement windows open outward on hinges, creating a bigger opening for ventilation and making cleaning easier from inside. They’re the typical choice on Ashfield properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and new builds.
We manufacture custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups. Just like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard, no exceptions.
Our timber casement windows page has more information on all listed styles and configurations.
Why timber windows are the right choice
Timber’s centuries-long position as the go-to window material is not just a matter of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that matter most to homeowners.
Natural thermal insulation
Timber conducts heat far less quickly than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. Superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.
Scotland. Cold. Expensive to heat. A timber frame’s thermal qualities make a measurable difference.
Repair not replace
Timber window deteriorates? Good news: you can repair it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail, fresh timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is different: no repair option, so when it breaks, the entire unit goes to landfill and you’re starting from scratch.
Year after year, look after rather than start over. Over the lifespan of a property, that adds up to real money not spent and a lot less waste going to landfill.
The sustainable option
The timber we work with is procured from sustainably managed woodland, every length of it.
Timber is a renewable resource that stores carbon throughout its working life and breaks down naturally at end of life. UPVC is a oil-derived plastic, and aluminium manufacturing is highly carbon-heavy.
Your property’s environmental footprint matters to you? Then timber is the obvious choice. It always has been.
Timber windows, character and value
Timber windows have a substance, a character, and a natural grain that no artificial material can match.
On a sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows create an visual fit that UPVC consistently fails to replicate.
Timber windows also bring genuine value to a property, particularly older properties where period features are part of the appeal.
Double glazing timber windows
Every window we build, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted. No add-ons needed.
The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame and uses two panes of glass with a sealed cavity. The result is reduced heat transfer and better sound insulation.
The timber frame’s natural insulating properties combined with the double-glazed sealed unit achieve strong thermal and acoustic results across both window types. That’s what you get as standard.
Need glazing bars for a traditional divided-light appearance? We can install those as well.
If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can often switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This keeps the existing frames and lifts thermal performance without a full replacement.
Common on Ashfield’s older properties. Original sash windows: well-built. Single glazing: lets in cold air and street noise.
Every unit we put in meets current building regulations governing thermal performance.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland has over 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.
Where a property falls within one of these areas, UPVC is not an permitted window material, and the local planning authority may require replacements to replicate the original design in material, design, and profile.
Having made timber windows for conservation area and listed building properties throughout Scotland for over 20 years, we have developed a thorough understanding of council requirements.
We walk you through consent conditions. We produce windows that satisfy planning condition. Modern standards guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Types of timber we work with
Woodfellas stocks two types of timber for its entire window range.
Treated pine is what most people pick, pressure-treated to prevent rot and decay, holds a paint finish well, and holds up in Ashfield’s damp weather with no a problem.
For properties where a natural timber look is desired, or where additional strength is required, we supply hardwood, which is by nature more resistant to deterioration and takes stains and oils beautifully.
We advise on the right timber for each project, based on the property, its exposure level, and the finish you want. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.
Timber windows FAQ
Which wooden window types do you make?
We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both available in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Ashfield style, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and open outward. We also build fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.
Is timber a better choice than UPVC?
On results, lifespan, and looks: yes. Timber insulates better at the comparable frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced when damage happens. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is strongly favoured in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing to double glazing in existing timber windows?
Many cases, yes. The existing frames are good, so we switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames stay, character is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
