If you need timber windows done properly in Arden, Woodfellas are the right choice. We build, restore, and fit timber windows out of our Arden base, serving houses and commercial clients throughout Central Scotland.
Each window is made to measure using sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood timber. Double glazing and upgraded security are included as standard on every unit.
Whether you need sash and case windows for a period tenement, casement windows for a newer extension, or a complete set of replacement windows for any sort of property, we build them ourselves and put them in ourselves.
Wooden windows we make
Two primary types of timber window, each right for different properties and specifications. Both offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both come with double-glazed sealed units as standard.
Sash windows
Scotland’s original window type.
You know what makes sash windows great? They move vertically in a box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. They’re the standard window on most of Arden’s period tenements, and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.
Whether your sash windows need restoring, repairing, or replacing altogether, we produce custom ones that match the period profiles and proportions, while still delivering modern thermal and acoustic results.
The original frames are solid, so why swap them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is often the most sensible call. We complete full assessments first, before we ever recommend replacement.

Casement windows
Casement windows are hinged and open out to open, giving a bigger opening for airflow and making cleaning from inside much easier. They’re widespread on Arden properties dating from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.
Side hung, top hung, fixed, we manufacture custom timber casement windows in all three configurations. Like our sash windows, every single one is custom-built and double glazed as standard.
Our timber casement windows page has more detail on all listed designs and options.
Why timber is the right choice for windows
Timber has been the default window material for hundreds of years, and it’s worth knowing why. It genuinely outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that matter to property owners, and that’s not just tradition.
How timber insulates naturally
Timber carries heat far less easily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at the same frame thicknesses. Superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even gets involved.
Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a real impact to what you spend.
Repair, don’t replace
Timber window gets damaged? You can sort it.
Rot in a sill or bottom rail can be excised and new timber fitted in its place. A damaged section of frame can be rebuilt. UPVC offers no such route: when it breaks, the whole unit ends up in landfill and the process starts from scratch.
Over the working life of a property, the capacity to look after timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement represents genuine savings in both money and waste.
Sustainability
All our timber comes from ethically managed woodland.
Timber: renewable. Locks in carbon. Biodegrades cleanly. UPVC: plastic from oil. Aluminium production: highly energy-intensive.
If the carbon impact of your house is important to you, timber is obviously the better choice. It’s not complicated.
Timber windows, character and value
The heft, depth, and natural grain of timber windows is something no artificial alternative can match.
On a sandstone tenement, a light stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows just look right in a way that UPVC just can’t pull off.
Timber windows also bring genuine value to a property, particularly period homes where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.
Timber windows with double glazing
Every window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units installed as standard. Always.
Two layers of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit sits inside the timber frame and handles the rest, reducing heat transfer, lifting sound insulation.
The timber frame does its bit. The double glazing does its bit. Together they give you excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both types, sash or casement, same result.
Need a traditional divided-light look? We add glazing bars.
The frames are solid, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can convert to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving what’s worth keeping, boosting performance, no full replacement required.
This is a frequent request on Arden’s older properties. The existing sash windows are well-constructed, but the single glazing lets in cold air and street noise, and upgrading to double glazing solves both.
Every unit we fit: satisfies current building regulations for thermal performance.

Conservation area timber windows
Scotland contains in excess of 600 designated conservation areas.
If your property is in one of these areas, it’s worth understanding that UPVC is not an acceptable window material. Your local council will likely require replacements that replicate the original in material, design, and profile.
Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings across Scotland. We know what the council requires.
We help with consent conditions. We build windows that meet planning condition. Modern performance included. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.
Timber types
Across all our window products, we stock two types of timber.
Treated pine: most requested choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Takes paint well. Performs well in Arden’s wet weather.
If a natural timber finish is what you want, or if extra longevity is called for, hardwood is the option. It’s by nature more resistant to wear and accepts stains and oils very well.
Property. Exposure level. Finish. We recommend the right timber for each project.
Timber windows, your questions answered
Which wooden window types do you manufacture?
Sash and case is the traditional Arden style, moving vertically in a box frame, that’s one type. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward, that’s the other. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood. And we produce fixed window panels too, for any opening configuration.
Are timber windows better than UPVC?
For results, longevity, and appearance? Yes, timber wins. It insulates more effectively at the equivalent frame thickness, lasts a lot longer when looked after, and can be restored not replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and highly preferred in conservation areas.
Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?
In most cases, yes. If your current timber frames are in good condition, we can upgrade the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. That keeps the existing frames and character while lifting thermal and acoustic results.
