Timber Windows Anderston

If you need timber windows done well in Anderston, Woodfellas are who you want. We build, refurbish, and install timber windows out of our Anderston premises, covering houses and businesses throughout Central Scotland.

Every window we produce is custom-built from responsibly sourced treated pine or hardwood timber, with double glazing and improved security fitted as standard.

Whatever you need, sash and case for a tenement, casement for a contemporary extension, or a full new set for any kind of property, we produce them ourselves and put them in ourselves.

Our timber window range

We manufacture two primary types of timber window, each suited to different properties and specifications. Both are offered in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

The traditional window style for Scottish properties.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Anderston’s period tenements were fitted with sash windows, moving up and down in a timber box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the only accepted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the existing design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We restore, sort, and build custom ones replicating existing profiles and proportions, while delivering modern thermal and acoustic standards where it matters.

A lot of the time, restoring the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the better option if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full assessment before recommending full replacement.

Casement window types

Casement windows open outward on hinges, giving a wider opening for ventilation and making cleaning simple from inside. They’re the typical choice on Anderston properties built from the 1920s onwards, as well as rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we produce is made to measure and fitted with double glazing as standard.

Our timber casement windows page covers all available styles and options in full detail.

Why choose timber for your windows

There’s a good reason people have been installing timber windows in houses for generations, and it’s not just because they always have. Timber truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that matter to homeowners.

Natural insulating qualities

Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the same frame widths. This translates to superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing is even considered.

Scotland’s not exactly warm, and heating bills are no joke, so the fact that timber frames insulate better makes a tangible impact to what you spend.

Fix, don’t replace

The great thing about timber windows is that if something gets damaged, you can fix it.

Got rot in a sill or bottom rail? You remove it and fit fresh timber. Damaged part of frame? Rebuild. With UPVC, you can’t do that. When it fails, the whole thing goes to landfill and you’re starting over.

Over the lifespan of a property, being able to look after timber windows rather than having to replace them cuts real money and cuts down on material waste.

Timber sustainability

Every bit of timber we select comes from ethically managed woodland, that’s how it works.

Timber is a natural material, it holds carbon as it ages and breaks down cleanly when it’s done. UPVC is plastic derived from oil, and aluminium production takes a significant amount of power.

For homeowners for whom the environmental impact of their property is a priority, timber represents the obvious choice.

Appeal and property value

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, weight, character, texture. No synthetic alternative can copy that.

On a sandstone tenement, a pale stone villa, or a traditional Scottish cottage, timber windows just belong in a way that UPVC never quite manages.

And they contribute genuine value to a property, especially period properties where period features are part of the appeal.

Timber windows with double glazing

Every window we produce, sash or casement, features double-glazed sealed units as standard. No add-ons required.

Two layers of glass. A cavity between them. The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame and handles the rest, limiting heat transfer, boosting sound insulation.

Combine the timber frame’s natural insulating properties with double glazing and you get solid thermal and acoustic performance across both window styles.

For properties that need a traditional divided-light look, we can fit glazing bars as an addition.

If your older timber windows are still in good condition but single glazed, we can in many cases convert them to double glazing as part of a restoration programme. This preserves the original frames and lifts thermal performance without a full replacement.

This represents a regular project on Anderston’s older properties, where solidly built existing sash windows are solid but single glazing allows in cold and ambient noise.

And every unit we put in meets the latest building regulations for thermal performance, so no worries there.

Timber windows and conservation areas and listed buildings

Scotland has more than 600 recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it makes a difference.

Where a property falls within one of these areas, UPVC is not an approved window material, and the local council authority may require replacements to replicate the original window in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland. We understand what the council requires.

We help with consent requirements. We make windows that meet planning condition. Modern performance guaranteed. Our sash and case windows page covers the regulations in more depth.

Timber types

Woodfellas uses two types of timber for its entire window product range.

Treated pine is the most popular option, and for good reason. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, accepts a paint finish well, and performs reliably in Anderston’s damp conditions.

A natural timber look, extra durability, hardwood answers both. Inherently more wear-resistant, and it accepts stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure level. Finish. We advise on the right timber for each job.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows can you make?

We build sash and case windows and casement windows, both made in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Anderston design, moving up and down within a box frame. Casement windows open out. We also make fixed window panels for any window opening setup.

Timber or UPVC, which is the better window?

On every fronts, thermal performance, longevity, and appearance, yes, timber is the superior choice. It insulates better at the same frame widths, lasts considerably longer when regularly maintained, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage happens. Timber is also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is highly favoured in conservation areas.

Can you replace single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In most cases, yes. Solid current frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames are preserved, thermal and acoustic performance improves.
