Timber Windows Alloa

Woodfellas are Alloa’s established timber window specialists, building, refurbishing, and fitting wooden windows from a Alloa premises that covers houses and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Every window that leaves our workshop is custom-built from sustainably sourced treated pine or hardwood, and double glazing and upgraded security come as standard.

Sash and case for a tenement? Casements for a new extension? A complete replacement set for any property? We build them all in-house and install ourselves.

Our range of timber windows

We make two primary types of timber window, each built for different properties and requirements. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the first choice.

Before UPVC, before aluminium, Alloa’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements were fitted with sash windows, sliding up and down in a box frame on weighted cords and pulleys. They’re still the required replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

The finest sash windows should look exactly like the original. We restore, sort, and build custom ones matching period profiles and proportions, while giving you modern thermal and acoustic standards where it counts.

Restoration typically includes draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, and it’s the smartest call where the original frames are sound. We do full assessments before recommending any replacement.

Casement windows

Hinged. Swing out to open. Bigger opening, easier access from inside. Standard on Alloa properties dating from the 1920s on, including extensions, dormers, and new builds.

We produce custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever style you need, we can make it. And like our sash windows, every casement is built to your size and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page covers all available styles and configurations in complete detail.

Why timber windows are the right choice

Timber’s long-standing position as the preferred window material is not just a question of tradition. It actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in a number of areas that matter most to households.

Timber’s insulating properties

The frame counts, not just the glass. Timber conducts heat far less easily than aluminium and outperforms UPVC at the equivalent frame width, giving better thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

In Scotland, where energy costs are a real challenge, the insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable impact, and that matters over time.

Fix, don’t replace

Timber window takes a knock? Good news: you can sort it.

Rot in a sill, new timber goes in. Damaged frame section, it gets repaired. The story with UPVC is different: no repair option, so when it fails, the entire unit ends up in landfill and you’re back at the beginning.

Over the lifespan of a property, the ability to maintain and repair timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement represents genuine savings in both cost and material waste.

Sustainability

Every piece of timber we select comes from responsibly managed forest.

Holds carbon as long as it works, then decomposes cleanly. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium production is highly carbon-heavy. The difference is clear.

If the carbon footprint of your house matters to you, timber is the obvious option. It’s as simple as that.

Appeal and property value

Weight. Depth. Grain. No synthetic alternative can replicate it.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Period Scottish cottage. Put timber windows in and they look right. Put UPVC in and it’s always slightly off, it never quite manages that same rightness.

And they bring real value to a property, especially older properties where original or sympathetic features are part of the appeal.

Double glazing in timber windows

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we make feature double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always fitted.

Sealed unit in the frame. Two layers of glass. Sealed cavity between them. Reduces heat transfer. Improves sound insulation.

Combined with the inherent insulating qualities of the timber frame, a double-glazed timber window delivers excellent thermal and acoustic performance across both sash and casement styles.

Need a traditional divided-light appearance? We install glazing bars.

Where older timber windows remain structurally sound but single glazed, we can in many cases switch them to double glazing as part of a restoration, keeping the original frames and lifting thermal performance without needing a full replacement.

Regular request on Alloa’s older properties. Existing sash windows: well-built. Single glazing: allows in cold air and road noise.

Building regulations for thermal performance? Every unit we install meets them. No exceptions.

Conservation area timber windows

There are more than 600 conservation areas in Scotland, a significant number.

In a conservation area? UPVC is not an permitted window material, and your local council may require replacements that mirror the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years manufacturing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we understand what the council expects.

We can walk you through consent conditions and produce windows meeting every planning condition while achieving modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the applicable regulations in more detail.

Timber types

Two timber types. That’s it. We work with both for the entire window product range.

Most customers pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to ward off rot and decay, takes a painted finish really well, and handles Alloa’s rain-heavy climate with no issue.

Want a natural timber look? Need extra hardwearing performance? Hardwood. Inherently more resistant to wear. Accepts stains and oils beautifully.

We advise on the right timber for each project, based on the property, its exposure, and the finish you need. Just let us know and we’ll guide you.

FAQ, timber windows

What types of timber windows do you manufacture?

We produce sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Alloa style, sliding up and down within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also build fixed window panels to suit any opening configuration.

Are timber windows better than UPVC?

On results, longevity, and looks: yes. Timber insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts considerably longer when looked after, and can be repaired rather than replaced when damage occurs. It’s also the sole material permitted for listed buildings and is highly preferred in conservation areas.

Is it possible to upgrade single glazing in timber windows?

In most cases, yes. Solid existing frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Existing frames are preserved, thermal and acoustic performance gets better.
