Timber Windows Alexandria

If you need timber windows done well in Alexandria, Woodfellas are the right choice. We build, refurbish, and fit wooden windows out of our Alexandria base, working across homes and commercial properties throughout Central Scotland.

Not a single window we make without being custom-built. Ethically sourced treated pine or hardwood, double glazing, and improved security, all standard.

Whether you need sash and case windows for a traditional tenement, casement windows for a modern extension, or a full set of new windows for any kind of property, we make them ourselves and install ourselves.

Our range of timber windows

Two types. Two sets of requirements. We make one for older properties, one for newer ones, but both come in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Sash and case windows

The original Scottish window, and still the first choice.

Slide vertically. Box frame. Cords and counterbalance weights. That’s a sash window. They’re on most of Alexandria’s Victorian and Edwardian tenements and the only permitted replacement for listed buildings and conservation area properties where sash and case was the original design.

We renovate, fix, and build custom sash windows built to match existing profiles and proportions. The result is modern thermal and acoustic standards in a window that fits right in.

A lot of the time, renovating the existing frames, draught-proofing and double glazing, is the smarter option if the frames themselves are still sound. We do a full assessment before recommending a replacement.

Casement windows

Casement windows swing outward on hinges, bigger opening for fresh air, easy access from inside. You’ll find them all over Alexandria properties built from the 1920s onwards, and on rear extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

Side hung, top hung, fixed, three setups, all in custom timber. And like our sash windows, every casement we make is built to order and double glazed as standard.

Our timber casement windows page has more information on all available styles and configurations.

Why choose timber for your windows

Timber’s historic position as the first-choice window material is not just a question of tradition. It truly outperforms UPVC and aluminium in multiple areas that matter most to property owners.

Natural insulation

Timber carries heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at equivalent frame thicknesses. Superior thermal performance from the frame itself, before the double glazing even factors in.

In Scotland, energy costs are a real challenge. The insulating properties of a timber frame make a measurable effect to those costs, and it’s worth bearing in mind.

Repair not replace

Where deterioration appears in a timber window, repair remains a viable choice.

Rot in a sill? Take it out and fit fresh timber. Damaged section of frame? Replace in section. UPVC can’t do any of that. When it gives up, the whole unit ends up in landfill and you’re back to square one.

Over the working life of a property, repairing and maintaining timber windows rather than replacing them cuts money and reduces material waste. It’s a straightforward calculation.

Sustainability

All our timber is sourced from sustainably managed woodland.

Locks in carbon as long as it works, then decomposes naturally. No landfill, no harmful process. UPVC is plastic from oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely energy-intensive. The difference doesn’t need explaining.

If the environmental impact of your property matters to you, timber is obviously the right option. It’s straightforward.

The appeal and value of timber windows

Pick up a timber window sash and you feel it, substance, character, texture. No artificial alternative can copy that.

Traditional sandstone tenement. Pale stone villa. Traditional Scottish cottage. Timber windows belong. UPVC never quite manages.

Timber windows also contribute genuine value to a property, particularly period properties where original or sympathetic features are what attracts buyers.

Double glazed wooden windows

Whether sash or casement, all the windows we manufacture come with double-glazed sealed units fitted. It’s always included.

The sealed unit is housed within the timber frame, employing two panes of glass with a cavity to limit heat transfer and boost sound insulation.

The timber frame’s natural thermal characteristics combined with the double-glazed sealed unit give you strong thermal and acoustic results across both window types. That’s what you get as standard.

If your property requires a traditional divided-light look, we can fit glazing bars, just let us know.

Still solid but single glazed? We can in many cases convert to double glazing as part of a restoration, preserving the original frames, lifting performance, and skipping a full replacement.

It’s a particularly frequent project on Alexandria’s older properties, well-constructed original sash windows, but single glazing that allows in cold air and road noise. Readily fixed.

And every unit we put in satisfies current building regulations for thermal standards, so you’re covered.

Listed buildings timber windows

Scotland has in excess of 600 designated conservation areas.

If your property is in one of these areas, you need to know that UPVC is not an acceptable window material. Your local council will often require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

Over 20 years producing timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland, we know exactly what the council expects.

We can advise on consent conditions and make windows meeting every planning condition while giving you modern thermal standards. Our sash and case windows page covers the applicable regulations in greater detail.

Types of timber we work with

We use two timber types across all window product range, here’s what you need to know about each.

Most people pick treated pine. It’s pressure-treated to resist rot and decay, takes a paint finish really well, and performs in Alexandria’s damp weather with no trouble.

A natural timber finish, extra hardwearing performance, hardwood answers both. By nature more resistant to wear, and it takes stains and oils beautifully.

Property. Exposure level. Finish. We help you choose the right timber for each project.

Common questions about timber windows

What types of timber windows do you make?

We make sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Alexandria design, sliding vertically within a box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also produce fixed window panels to suit any opening setup.

Is timber better than UPVC?

Yes, for results, longevity, and looks, timber is the better choice. It insulates better at the equivalent frame width, lasts considerably longer when maintained, and can be fixed rather than fully replaced. It’s also the only material accepted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Upgrading single glazing to double glazing in timber windows, is it possible?

Most cases, yes. The current frames are good, so we convert the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration programme. Original frames stay, appearance is preserved, and the thermal and acoustic performance gets better, without a full replacement.
