Timber Windows Abington

Woodfellas made our name in Abington making timber windows, and that’s what we’re still doing. We produce, refurbish, and install wooden windows from our Abington premises, covering homes and businesses right across Central Scotland.

Built to order, sustainably sourced timber, double glazing, enhanced security. Every window we produce is built the same way. No shortcuts.

Tenement, extension, any property. Sash and case, casement, or a complete replacement set: we produce in-house and install ourselves.

Our wooden window options

We produce two primary types of timber window, one right for older properties, one built for newer ones. Both are available in treated pine or hardwood, and both feature double-glazed sealed units as standard.

Traditional sash windows

The classic Scottish window, and still the first choice.

Sash windows work on a clever system: they move up and down in a timber box frame using cords and counterbalance weights. You’ll spot them on most of Abington’s period tenements, and if you’ve got a listed building or conservation area property, they’re the only accepted replacement where sash and case was the existing design.

We refurbish, repair, and manufacture custom sash windows designed to match existing profiles and proportions. The outcome is modern thermal and acoustic standards in a window that looks exactly as it should.

The original frames are in good shape, so why replace them? Restoration, draught-proofing and double glazing upgrades, is usually the better option. We carry out full surveys first, before we recommend going further.

Hinged windows

Casement windows swing out on hinges, giving a wider opening for airflow and making window cleaning simple from inside. They’re the common option on Abington properties going back from the 1920s onwards, as well as extensions, dormers, and newer builds.

We build custom timber casement windows in side hung, top hung, and fixed setups, so whatever setup you need, we can make it. And like our sash windows, every casement is made to measure and double glazed as standard.

All the styles, all the choices, it’s on our timber casement windows page.

Why choose timber for your windows

Timber has been the leading window material for centuries. Not just tradition, it actually outperforms UPVC and aluminium in several areas that count to property owners.

How timber insulates naturally

Timber transfers heat far less readily than aluminium. Outperforms UPVC at comparable frame thicknesses. Superior thermal efficiency from the frame itself, before the double glazing even comes into it.

In Scotland, energy costs are a real concern. The insulating characteristics of a timber frame make a measurable effect to those costs, and it’s worth knowing.

Repair, not replace

Timber window deteriorates? You can sort it.

Rot in a sill can be excised and new timber fitted in its place. A damaged part of frame can be repaired and restored. UPVC offers no such route: when it breaks, the entire unit goes to landfill and everything starts from scratch.

Over the lifetime of a property, the capacity to look after timber windows rather than carrying out full replacement represents genuine savings in both cost and waste.

The sustainable choice

All timber used in our windows is obtained from sustainably managed woodland.

Timber is a natural material that holds carbon throughout its working life and breaks down naturally at end of life. UPVC is a plastic based on oil, and aluminium manufacturing is extremely carbon-heavy, worth knowing if the environment is important to you.

If the carbon impact of your house matters to you, timber is clearly the right option. It’s straightforward.

Aesthetics and worth

Timber windows have a substance, a feel, and a texture that no man-made alternative can replicate.

On a traditional sandstone tenement, a blonde stone villa, or a period Scottish cottage, timber windows achieve an aesthetic fit that UPVC consistently fails to replicate.

And they contribute tangible value to a property too, especially older properties where period features are part of what makes them the appeal.

Double glazed timber windows

Every single window we manufacture, sash or casement, comes with double-glazed sealed units fitted as standard. Always.

The sealed unit is housed inside the timber frame, two sheets of glass with a sealed cavity between them, reducing heat transfer and boosting sound insulation.

Timber frame. Double glazing. Combined: solid thermal and acoustic results across both window types.

We can also install glazing bars if your property calls for a traditional divided-light appearance.

The frames are solid, they’re just single glazed. In a lot of cases, we can upgrade to double glazing as part of a restoration programme, retaining what’s worth saving, boosting performance, no full replacement needed.

It’s a very regular job on Abington’s older properties, well-built existing sash windows, but single glazing that admits cold and street noise. Readily fixed.

Every unit we fit satisfies the latest building regulations for thermal performance. That’s guaranteed.

Timber windows for conservation areas

Scotland has over 600 officially recognised conservation areas, and if you’re in one, it matters.

If your property is in one of these areas, UPVC is not an approved window material, and your local council might well require replacements that match the original in material, design, and profile.

We’ve been making timber windows for conservation areas and listed buildings throughout Scotland for over 20 years, so we know exactly what the council requires, nothing new to us.

We can walk you through consent requirements and make windows meeting every planning condition while delivering modern performance. Our sash and case windows page covers the applicable regulations in greater detail.

Timber types we work with

Across all our window products, we stock two types of timber.

Treated pine: most chosen choice. Pressure-treated against rot and decay. Takes a painted finish well. Works reliably in Abington’s rain-heavy conditions.

For properties where a natural timber finish is wanted, or where extra durability is needed, we supply hardwood, which is naturally more immune to deterioration and accepts stains and oils with excellent results.

We advise on the most appropriate timber for each job, taking into consideration the property age, its exposure, and the desired finish.

Timber windows FAQ

Which timber window types do you make?

We produce two main types: sash and case windows and casement windows, both offered in treated pine or hardwood. Sash and case are the traditional Abington style, moving vertically within a timber box frame. Casement windows are hinged and swing outward. We also make fixed window panels to match any window opening setup.

Are timber a better choice than UPVC?

On performance, longevity, and looks: yes. Timber insulates better at the comparable frame width, lasts a lot longer when maintained, and can be repaired rather than fully replaced when damage happens. It’s also the only material permitted for listed buildings and is greatly preferred in conservation areas.

Can you upgrade single glazing with double glazing in existing timber windows?

In many cases, yes. Sound current frames? We switch the glazing to double-glazed sealed units as part of a restoration. Existing frames are preserved, thermal and acoustic results improves.
