Great work workmanship, lovely guys. Go above and beyond, highly recommend
Most of Glasgow’s tenements, sandstone terraces, and villa streets were built between the 1860s and 1930s, and most of those buildings still have their original sash and case windows.
But over time, these windows need special attention.
Sash cords snap, the draught seal degrades, and the bottom rails start to rot where they’ve been neglected. The window rattles, then sticks, then stops closing properly.
Woodfellas are timber sash and case window experts working on Scottish homes across Glasgow and Central Scotland from our workshop for over 20 years. We restore, repair, and even manufacture bespoke replacements when a window’s past saving.

The name describes the mechanism.
The sash is the sliding panel of glass. The case is the hollow box frame built into the wall around the window opening.
Inside each case are two weights, one for the upper sash and one for the lower. They hang on sash cords running over pulley wheels set into the top of the frame.
Lift the lower sash and the weights descend on the other side. Let go and they hold the sash in position.
Unlike casement windows, which open outward on hinges, sash and case windows slide vertically.
Both sashes move independently, so you can open from the top, the bottom, or both. Your home gets excellent ventilation control without a panel swinging into the room or out to the street.
When the mechanism is working properly, you barely notice it.
When the cords break, which they do after years of use, the sash drops and stays dropped or becomes hard to move.
That’s where Woodfellas come in.
Not every traditional sash window needs the same approach.
Our sash windows Glasgow team takes the time to understand what your window needs to recommend whether repair or window refurbishment is right for you.
Full window refurbishment makes sense when the original window is structurally sound but underperforming.
Using joinery techniques that suit traditional windows, our skilled craftsmen can upgrade your glazing and fit draught-proofing throughout.
A restored sash and case window in a Glasgow tenement should feel like it was never anything other than right.
Smooth to open, quiet in the frame, warm in the room. That’s what we’re working towards every time.
Sash cord replacement is the most common repair we carry out.
When the cords snap, the weights sit uselessly inside the case with nothing connecting them to the sash.
We open the pocket piece, retrieve the weights, fit new sash cords, and set the pulleys correctly.
Our team will always check the condition of the rest of the window while we’re there so nothing goes unnoticed.
When a window is past economical repair, we manufacture new sash windows to your exact specifications in our workshop and supply and fit them to your property.
Every replacement window is expertly crafted and made to measure in hardwood or treated pine. We work hard to match the profile, proportions, and glazing bar pattern of the original.
As timber window manufacturers based in Glasgow, we install new sash and case windows across the city using high-quality materials and traditional techniques.
Our range of sash and case windows covers everything from a single replacement sash to a full set of new windows for a listed building. Double glazing and upgraded security hardware come as standard.

Bottom rails and sills take the worst of Glasgow’s weather.
Where the rot is contained to a section of the rail, we cut out the damaged timber and splice in new sections using matched traditional timber. The repair blends beautifully with the surrounding wood and the rest of the original window stays intact.
We believe that there is no need to lose a window that’s otherwise sound to a problem that only affects part of it.
The sash cords have broken and the counterbalance weights are sitting idle in the bottom of the case.
Broken sash cords are the most common sash and case repair we carry out. And on a window that’s otherwise intact it’s a straightforward job for our experienced team.
The draught seal between the sash and the frame has failed, or was never fitted. A draughty sash and case window also tends to rattle in the wind because of the same gap.
Draught-proofing as part of a service sorts helps solve all problems at once.
The bottom rail of the lower sash is the most exposed section of a sash and case window.
Where the rot is contained to a section of the rail, we cut out the damaged timber and splice in new sections using matched material.
The rest of the original window stays perfectly intact.
Decades of painting over the sash to protect it from Scotland’s wet weather can seal it to the frame.
We cut the sash free, clean the surfaces, adjust the fit where necessary, and get the mechanism running properly again.
The cords and pulleys get checked in the process to save you multiple repair jobs.
Original single-glazed panes lose heat quickly and let in street noise. We upgrade to double glazing without altering the visible profile of the window.
It depends on the existing structure of the window. If the box frame is sound and the sashes are structurally intact, refurbishment is a good call. You get a window that performs well without losing the original character. If the frame has deteriorated badly, or the timber has rotted beyond repair, replacement is the more practical route.
It depends on your property. Listed buildings require Listed Building Consent before any window is replaced. Properties in conservation areas may require prior approval from Glasgow City Council, particularly for windows on an elevation visible from a public road. For properties that are neither listed nor in a conservation area, replacement generally doesn’t need permission as long as it meets building regulations.
